How is hernia mesh used?
A hernia is caused by a tear or opening in weakened muscles of the abdominal wall. Internal organs and body fat can emerge and create a hernia. It’s estimated that there are about a million hernia procedures each year in the US and more than ninety percent of the surgeries include implanting plastic hernia mesh. Hernia mesh is a surgical implant to provide extra support for the torn or damaged tissues. It’s placed around the hernia to prevent recurrence, which is common when mesh isn’t used. Staples, stitches or medical glue is used to attach the mesh.
What problems could be caused by hernia mesh?
This mesh carries risks of serious problems for patients. They include:
- Severe, chronic, disabling pain
- The mesh can move within the body
- Bowel obstructions
- Adhesions to organs
- Organ perforation
- Infections
- Hernia recurrence
These complications can be so serious that they totally disabled the patient, making them unable to work or live a normal life. Since 2005, more than 200,000 units of hernia mesh have been recalled by manufacturers. The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 sent a warning letter to one manufacturer, Atrium, for their failure to address mesh infection and sterility complaints. Complaints to the FDA were made after human hair was found in the device. The following year the company issued a recall of C-Qur mesh due to an increased the risk of infection. A mesh made by Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, was voluntarily recalled in 2016 because of a higher risk of recurrence and revision surgery compared to other mesh products. These discoveries have sparked a surge of mass tort cases and have also given life to a very specific form of advertising: marketing for mesh hernia lawyers and/or law firms.
